Technical Information

Map and Terrain
New map, produced in October 2006, with a scale of 1:20000 and 5 meters contour interval.

The terrain is a mix of forest, open land and cultivated land. The southern part of the map is mainly flat. But the northern part is more hilly with some tougher climbs and more technical descents.
There is a rich path network, consisting mostly of regular quality paths.

Other Information:
* Control codes will be numbered from 101 to 199.
* Last control is number 200.
* Athletes will have to punch the 'finish' control at the end.
* Distance to the start is 900m on Saturday and 2700m on Sunday.
* Distance to the finish is 900m from the event centre on both days.
* In Portugal it is forbidden to ride the bike out of the paths. You can get out of the paths, but you have to carry the bike with both wheels in the air.
* Due to some bad weather at the end of the year, there are many branches and some fallen trees on the paths. Fallen trees that block the passage are marked on the map, but we might have missed some... Also be careful of the branches on the ground as they can cause some mechanical problems!
* It has been a wet winter. Be ready to get your feet wet!
* Again because of heavy rains, some paths have deep ditches running along them (specially on the more severe slopes). Those paths are obviously marked as being of bad quality, but do be careful anyway.
* In Portugal we drive on the right side of the road. Please keep to the right while riding and overtake slower competitors by the left.
* If you ride on a road with traffic, please respect all traffic regulations.
* This WRE event is being held together with many less competitive classes. Please respect the slower riders. Remember that some of them are trying MTB-O for the first time.
* The map is delimited on the west by a road with a lot of fast moving traffic. It is therefore absolutely prohibited to use the road. This road will be marked on the map as 'forbidden route'.
The courses were designed so that the road will never be the best option. But the road will be patrolled and athletes using it will be disqualified.
* To the south of the map there is a forbidden area. To the north of this area there is a path which must not be used. This path will be marked as out of bounds and forbidden route on the map.
Again the best option for the courses does not use this road. The entrances to this path will be blocked with tape and out of bounds signs. People from the organization will disqualify any athlete who uses this path.
* A new fence was recently built on the northern tip of the map. This made a possible route choice unusable.
On the map this path will be marked as forbidden.
